| Advertising potential | [TV] |
| The BBC 9o'clock news last night reported the advertising potential of Beagle 2, with Science Correspondent James Wilkinson suggesting the airbags which cushion the lander as it hits the surface could carry company logos.
BBC News Online titled the story "Getting the message across - on Mars" |
| Last week Anglia TV showed Colin Pillinger demonstrating the Beagle model to presenter Penny Wright; the broadcast included an interview with musicians Dave Rowntree and Alex James filmed at the London Planetarium.
Blur fans will have understood Anglia's promotion of the interview - "from Parklife to Mars life" ! |

| Beagle 2 selected for Mars Express | [PROJECT] |
| At the ESA Science Programme Committee (SPC) Meeting held today at Paris HQ, the Committee approved the Mars Express mission for launch in 2003. The mission will be re-approved at the end of Phase B (end 1999). |
| Beagle 2 is approved likewise until the end of 1999. Whilst our current funding plan was acceptable to ESA, we will need to confirm further financial backing so that the future of Beagle 2 is assured to the launch date. |

| TV time again | [TV] |
| BBC Newsnight reviewed various aspects of the US Space Programme focusing on International Space Station. Two Beagle 2 team members were studio guests: Colin Pillinger talking about landing Beagle 2 on Mars and the public
interest that the mission is raising and Andrew Coates (MSSL) supporting robotic rather than manned space studies. Musician Billy Bragg enthusiastically made the case for manned space travel. |

| Blur musicians support Beagle 2 | [MUSIC] |
| Dave Rowntree and Alex James, drummer and bassist respectively with the band Blur, have been working with the Beagle 2 team. Both have a long standing interest in space and join us in believing that landing a British
spacecraft on Mars, and carrying out experiments to search for signs of life, is exactly the mission to inspire the youth of Britain. Today we took the opportunity for a photoshoot with Dave, Alex and the Beagle 2 model
in London. Tomorrow we move on to the CBI Conference - how is this for the widest possible appeal? |

| Continuing awareness | [MEDIA] |
| The week has seen continued press interest in Beagle 2 and our continuing search for funding. Both the Daily Telegraph and BBC News On line services have Beagle 2 articles, the latter in the form of a comprehensive review. |
| Numerous interviews followed news of ESA's scientific and technical approval, including during last weekend BBC Radio 4 (headlined on news), Radio 2, Radio 5 Live and even Radio 1. Ruscoe and Co carried an interview with
Pillinger from the University College London Mars day which prompted phone calls from motorists suggesting possible funding sources! |
| Tomorrow's World Magazine (October) includes Beagle, but perhaps more bizarrely the society monthly Harpers and Queen included "Professor Colin Pillinger, the life on Mars guru" amongst its listing of
the new British elite! |

| Beagle 2 a priority | [PROJECT] |
| Following three scientific peer reviews and one technical assessment, the European Space Agency have confirmed the Beagle 2 lander as a priority for the 2003 Mars Express mission. The news was announced last
night by Sir Peter Gadsden at a reception for the Research Team given by the City of London Corporation at Mansion House. |
| ESA Science News carries the announcement on line that the Space Science Advisory Committee (following advice from the Solar System Working Group) endorsed the proposal of the Beagle 2 lander for Mars Express,
under certain conditions. |
| The final decision now lies with the Science Programme Committee which meets 2/3 November, by which time a credible funding plan for Beagle 2 must be in place. |
