Recording for Mars[MUSIC]
Yesterday in London software engineers from Science Systems who are responsible for Beagle 2's on-board software joined forces with Blur to programme the specially written call sign into the source code. TV and radio crews watched on. All communications from Beagle 2 back to Earth will start with the chosen notes of the music.
On the left Blur's Damon Albarn and Alex James entering the code into a project computer. And on the right, over coffee, Colin Pillinger, Alex James, Dave Rowntree and Roger Ward discuss the frequencies of the notes in the signal. Both by photographer Jonathan Oppong-Wiafe.

Where Beagle 2 goes, NASA follows[MUSIC]
According to NASA WATCH, NASA is moving from rocket science to rock music. The Agency commissioned a US boy band (Natural) to produce a pop song, insisting it is not a gimmick, but to inspire the MTV generation, "by being hip" according to Dan Goldin, Head of NASA.
Part of the Blur track, Beagle 2, will signal our safe landing on Mars. Hearing of NASA's plans, Blur bassist Alex James said "they will never get Damien Hirst to paint spots on their rocket".

Blurred face[MUSIC]
Our Mars effort continues to feature in a wide selection of publications, not just those aimed at scientists. In the latest issue of the popular magazine The Face a series of interviews with members of Blur in advance of their new album release describes Alex and Dave's support of the OU group. The involvement of pop idols has certainly ensured that Beagle 2 is getting heard about all over the UK. Below: Dave Rowntree and Alex James at a photoshoot off the Portobello Road in London with Colin Pillinger and the earlier model of Beagle 2.

Blur musicians support Beagle 2[MUSIC]
Dave Rowntree and Alex James, drummer and bassist respectively with the band Blur, have been working with the Beagle 2 team. Both have a long standing interest in space and join us in believing that landing a British spacecraft on Mars, and carrying out experiments to search for signs of life, is exactly the mission to inspire the youth of Britain. Today we took the opportunity for a photoshoot with Dave, Alex and the Beagle 2 model in London. Tomorrow we move on to the CBI Conference - how is this for the widest possible appeal?
