| The ESA Ministerial Meeting gets underway in Edinburgh today under the Chairmanship of Lord Sainsbury. Speaking on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme this morning outlining Britain's role in ESA,
Lord Sainsbury explained his enthusiasm for Beagle 2 with some well chosen soundbites: |
| ..most exciting space exploration, take for example the Mars Express project and in particular the Beagle 2 lander which is part of that .. It's a very exciting project .. which is very much a British project ..
hugely complicated and I think a very exciting scientific project .. and a key part of space exploration |

| Adjunct scientists meet | [MEETINGS] |
| Scientists interested in Mars met in London to hear team members describe the instruments and experiments which will be aboard Beagle 2. After an introduction by the lead scientist who outlined the
healthy financial state of the project, the Adjunct Scientists listened to talks about the landing site selection and reports on the readiness of instruments and sample handling devices. |

| The Beagle 2 Industrial Team tell it internationally - IMEWG at MMS | [MEETINGS] |
| Eight members of IMEWG (International Mars Exploration Working Group) were treated to an exposition of the industrial strength and heritage behind Beagle 2 following a request to the British National
Space Centre by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California) to coincide with the London meeting of IMEWG. |
| Several members of NASA and the Canadian, French and Hungarian space agencies came to Matra Marconi Space's (MMS) Stevenage site and were noticeably impressed with what they saw
and heard. Most of the companies in the Beagle 2 industrial team were represented and this promoted a powerful message of strength and cohesion. |

| Consortium meeting and Phase A2 BRR (Beagle Requirements Review) | [MEETINGS] |
| Leicester hosted four days of intensive meetings for all the Beagle 2 scientists and engineers. At the wind-up of Phase A2, both MMS (Toulouse) and ESA (ESTEC) declared themselves pleased with
progress. Beagle 2 moved into Phase B with a long list of action items. |

| Paris symposium | [MEETINGS] |
| The first week of February sees the International Symposium "Mars Exploration Program and Sample Return Mission" in Paris. Colin will present "Beagle 2 - A lander for Mars" on 3 Feb. Many interesting
sessions are promised including exobiology, in situ analysis and martian meteorite studies. |
| Beagle 2 is approved likewise until the end of 1999. Whilst our current funding plan was acceptable to ESA, we will need to confirm further financial backing so that the future of Beagle 2 is assured to the launch date. |
