| Gresham Lecture | [LECTURES] |
| Professor Pillinger, in his capacity of Gresham Astronomy Professor, delivers the next free public lecture on Friday 2 October 1998 at 1.00pm at Gresham College, City of London. This will be titled Anatomy of a Space Mission.
Here Professor Pillinger takes a behind the scenes look at the science and politics of the space race. |

| New model at Farnborough | [MODEL] |
| A new model (pictured right) of the Beagle 2 lander will be unveiled at the Farnborough International Air Show next week (7-13 September). Constructed by Matra Marconi Space (MMS),
the model will be displayed on the British National Space Centre stand. |
| The display will also have publicity material available for visitors comprising a 70 by 50 cm full colour poster sponsored by Martin-Baker Aircraft Company and produced by Quadrant in addition to a four page
tabloid' style newspaper called Mars Express produced by The Open University (Planetary Sciences Research Institute and Public Relations). An animation
sequence compiled by MMS of the lander carrying out in situ experiments on Mars will be showing on the display. |

| New meteorite initial results | [MARS] |
| The Planetary Sciences Research Institute hosted a press conference to announce the results of analyses they conducted to confirm the martian origin of a meteorite recovered from the Sahara desert (pictured right).
This sample, despite its intrinsic scientific interest, will not answer the questions about life on Mars to be addressed by Beagle 2. |
| The huge interest shown again in martian meteorites demonstrates the appetite of the media and public for all things martian and we hope will aid our campaign to fly Beagle 2. |

| New meteorite | [MARS] |
| Various TV and radio broadcasts followed the announcement at the 61st Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting, Dublin that a meteorite of martian origin had been discovered in the Sahara. This new meteorite,
which if it is proven to be from Mars by analyses of its oxygen isotope composition scheduled for next week at The Open University, will be the 13th sample from that planet.
It will not answer questions about life on Mars because its sojourn on Earth for possibly 40,000 years will have contaminated it with terrestrial biology.
BBC News Online reported the story under the banner "Search for life on Mars". |
| Nevertheless it demonstrates the excitement which exists for all things martian and encourages the Beagle 2 team to push ahead with the British initiative. Numerous programmes carried live and recorded
interviews with Pillinger about the proposed Beagle 2 mission, its scientific aims and search for funds including a BBC TV interview showing the model of Beagle 2, recorded in Dublin. |

| Spreading the Beagle 2 message | [EVENTS] |
| At the end of July presentations are being given by Consortium members at scientific conferences ranging from COSPAR (Japan), SPIE (San Diego) and Meteoritical Society (Dublin). |
| Presentations to UK audiences continue with regular interest from the media including The Big Breakfast (Channel 4 TV). Recent Beagle talks by Colin Pillinger include UK Mars Society and
Smith Kline Beecham Analytical Sciences Colloquium. |

| Spreading the Beagle 2 message | [GOVERNMENT] |
| Mr Ian Taylor MBE MP continues to take an interest in space matters and is working with Colin Pillinger and the team to raise the profile of this exciting venture. The project has been brought to the attention of the
British Parliament by a cross party Early Day Motion tabled by Mr Taylor. The EDM reads - |
| PROPOSED MARS LANDER VEHICLE |
| That this House applauds the efforts of the consortium of university research laboratories, including the Open University, University of Leicester and University College London, which, with leading British companies
in the space industry, designed the Beagle 2 Lander vehicle and propose to build it for the Mars Express mission in 2003; recognises the alpha quality of the science and technology involved
in the project and the public awareness and educational possibilities; and urges other interested parties and the Government to support this British-led opportunity to analyse martian rock,
soil and atmosphere in situ to discover whether there have been or could be life forms on the planet. |
