Where Beagle 2 goes, NASA follows[MUSIC]
According to NASA WATCH, NASA is moving from rocket science to rock music. The Agency commissioned a US boy band (Natural) to produce a pop song, insisting it is not a gimmick, but to inspire the MTV generation, "by being hip" according to Dan Goldin, Head of NASA.
Part of the Blur track, Beagle 2, will signal our safe landing on Mars. Hearing of NASA's plans, Blur bassist Alex James said "they will never get Damien Hirst to paint spots on their rocket".

With thanks[BULLETINS]
Thanks to all those who have contacted us since seeing the programme. We were overwhelmed with emails and phone calls of support and interest, especially from people who did not know that Britain and Beagle 2 are off to Mars.
Apologies to those who missed the late slot or were unable to receive BBC2. The next Bulletin will include a review of the film - contact r.y.reynolds@open.ac.uk if you are not on the mailing list for a free copy.

What the papers said[IN PRINT]
"But watching this programme inspires confidence that, somehow, these gallant [a rather unimpressive-looking group of rustics, with sweet smiles, odd facial hair and a truly terrible collection of sweaters] throwbacks to the age of exploration will get their futuristic machine to Mars and their dreams realised back on Earth" The Times, Television Review, 24 July
The comment on the terrible sweaters has prompted a request for a wardrobe budget for the next film !

TODAY'S THE DAY, BEAGLE 2 ON TV[TV]
The story of the early part of the project is broadcast tonight, Monday, on BBC Two TV at 11.20pm. The programme has been widely publicised and is getting very good reviews.
The Financial Times (Monday 23 July) sums it up - "This extremely engaging and accessible documentary.. This is a prime-time programme in a late-night slot" and ".. a bright, bespectacled, somewhat scruffy English scientist called Colin.." !!

Note for your diary[TV]
A documentary following the Beagle 2 team in the early days of the project will be screened by BBC 2 on July 23rd at 11.20. Presented by Keith Allen, the film includes some of the ups and downs as Colin Pillinger not only has to get Beagle 2 aboard Mars Express but raise the money to pay for it as well. This date is 25 years since Viking landed on Mars and started to carry out its biological experiments.
