Filming in the rain[TV]
There may not be water on Mars but there was plenty falling at this photoshoot at the time of the British Association talk by Professor Pillinger. Off to film (for a BBC local TV series on space activities in Eastern England titled From Brancaster to Mars) in a nearby golf course bunker, the comparison in size of Beagle contrasted with the golf-buggy sized Athena Rover was subtly made.
Below: Golf buggy expertly kept on course by Beagle 2 GAP instrument manager Ian Praine, whilst Beagle 2 sits on Professor Pillinger's lap.

News flash[PROJECT]
Whilst we welcome all interest in Beagle 2, the story (posted on Space.com) that the Mars Society is raising funds for an instrument on Beagle 2 IS NOT CORRECT.
All sponsorship arrangements are handled by Beagle 2 and its agents M&C Saatchi. Any queries to Professor Pillinger.

Despite, rather than because of, .......![GOVERNMENT]
Professor Pillinger recently gave evidence to the UK Parliamentary Trade and Industry Committee. The report (House of Commons Session 1999-2000) UK Space Policy made interesting reading in particular the level of support for Beagle 2. The Summary of Conclusions and Recommendations included a report on Beagle 2 which started:
Beagle 2 is an example of an innovative approach to funding and of a project which seems to have won funding despite, rather than because of, the system. .....
The full report is available from the HM Stationery Office, ISBN 0 10246300 X.
