A sense of humour[IN PRINT]
Thanks for the comment by a reader whose letter was published in the Telegraph following the Beagle 2 coverage.
SIR - Having spent the past 30 years in electrical engineering, it came as a pleasant surprise to learn that the Beagle 2 equipment will be severely shock-tested before launch (Science, Apr. 3). However, I have found that the true test of the engineer's skill is knowing exactly where to hit a failed piece of equipment to restore it.

What the papers said[IN PRINT]
"But watching this programme inspires confidence that, somehow, these gallant [a rather unimpressive-looking group of rustics, with sweet smiles, odd facial hair and a truly terrible collection of sweaters] throwbacks to the age of exploration will get their futuristic machine to Mars and their dreams realised back on Earth" The Times, Television Review, 24 July
The comment on the terrible sweaters has prompted a request for a wardrobe budget for the next film !

Mars in their Eyes[IN PRINT]
Written by Will Hodgkinson and with a double page spread illustration showing Damien Hirst, Colin Pillinger, Dave Rowntree, Alex James and Beagle 2 (photographed by Gered Mankowitz) the Sunday Times magazine article outlined the mission and the contributions from Britpop and Britart. And as for the cup of tea in the picture (for those who saw the article!), well it was 4 o'clock of course .... time to put the kettle on.
"Beagle 2 - no bigger than a garden barbeque ... Britspace is now ready for takeoff"

The new rock and roll[IN PRINT]
It may not have been Glastonbury, reported the Daily Telegraph about the Science meets the Media party organised by the paper at the Royal Society - but Beagle 2 supporter Alex James of the rock band Blur clearly attracted the attention of reporters. During the event Alex was photographed with Colin Pillinger, and the two spent much of the time discussing the mission.
"Hey Science, it's the new rock and roll... it's exciting, it's glamorous" - Alex James

Beagle in the news again[IN PRINT]
In the Sunday Times (15 October) and under the banner headline The Race for the Red Planet: a feature article in The Guardian compares the approach of the British-led Beagle 2 team with that of the NASA Athena Rovers which will follow Beagle 2 to a martian landing. The science of Beagle 2 was discussed in detail at the recent British Association meeting prompting much interest in how the tiny lander can hope to match the might of NASA.
