The Royal Society New Frontiers in Science Exhibition[EXHIBITIONS]
The Beagle 2 exhibit combined science, art and many opportunities to tell the public, invited school students and Royal Society invitees about the project.
The display included the original watercolour of HMS Beagle (painted by Owen Stanley FRS, 1841) which took Charles Darwin on his epic journey, on loan for the duration of the exhibition from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Behind the rock strewn table were the two paintings by Damien Hirst. One, called Beagle 2 featured an image of the lander amongst the spots, the other, Red Planet, was a single red spot, with butterflies, signifying Mars. A plasma screen showed the computer animation of the landing and deployment of instruments.
BEAGLE 2 BULLETIN, a four page tabloid format handout was produced for the exhibition.

"Artist and pop group join mission to Red Planet"[IN PRINT]
Again Beagle makes the Daily Telegraph - and numerous other papers and broadcasts. "Damien Hirst plans exhibition on Mars - artist and pop group join mission to Red Planet" wrote Roger Highfield. This time Damien Hirst (and Dave Rowntree and Alex James) are pictured with Colin Pillinger, and of course the Beagle 2 model, in front of the two canvasses which Damien painted specially for the Royal Society exhibition.

On the radio[RADIO]
Front Row (Radio 4 Arts Review programme) interviewed Paul Murdin of BNSC in response to the announcement that Damien Hirst will provide a target on the lander for cameras and chemical and mineral spectrometer calibrations. This target, along the lines of one of Damien's spot paintings, not only will mean contemporary art being landed on a planet but it will play a vital role in the science of the mission - "a first, and a fabulous idea" according to Dr Murdin.
