Big Mars[MARS]
Unfortunately cloudy skies over the UK have prevented good views of Beagle 2's target as it approaches Earth closer it than has been for over a decade.
Dave Rowntree, the drummer of Blur, and lately specialist computer animator, got excited about Beagle 2 on Radio 1, and Colin Pillinger, against a graphic of a massive Mars that dwarfed the skyscrapers, explained to GMTV viewers how Mars would be even closer in two years time when Beagle is on its way.

Boil in the bag camera[INSTRUMENTS]
The flight spare of the stereo camera pair was recently sterilised (see News from Beagle 2 number 21) and later tested to check that everything worked as it should. The sterilisation did not in any way impair the functions of the camera. More about Planetary Protection coming soon.
Below: The stereo camera following sterilisation, prior to undergoing tests to show that its functions were unaffected.

Everyone wants a Beagle 2 story[TV]
Although it was Odyssey's day, Beagle 2 got its fair share of coverage - from TV and radio on launch day, TV critics trails of "Life on Mars" produced for Channel 5 TV by Pioneer (shown on 9 April), via Dave Rowntree's animation for the project in Q magazine, and the selection by Ian Taylor MP of Beagle 2 as one of his highlighted points in the Guardian 10 April [MPs were given 40 words to sum up 4 years], to a question on Beagle 2 on "Never mind the Buzzcocks" pop quiz (9 April) - and yes, the panel did know the answer !

Congratulations to Odyssey[LAUNCH]
Watching the Odyssey launch live via satellite at Astrium with some of the Beagle team - left to right Dave Rowntree, Mike Rickett and John Thatcher (Astrium), Alex James, Colin Pillinger.
The launch was nervously watched by the Beagle 2 team as the orbiter is one of the ways our data can get back to Earth. After Odyssey the next launch to Mars will be Beagle 2 aboard ESA's Mars Express.

Sample Return Discussion Meeting[PROJECT]
Pictured below is part of the audience at the meeting held on the 23 March to discuss possible Mars sample return. The meeting was widely reported in the press, the story posted by the Telegraph reporter reached some unlikely places like the Calgary Herald. The headline in New Scientist summed up the idea - Fetch, Beagle, Fetch !
