The thermal requirements are based on a detailed description of the martian environment as a function of latitude and season. Parameters such as sky temperature and effective conductance to the martian soil are subject to further investigation.

Some criteria which are fundamental to consider include the charging of the battery during which a temperature range of 1 to 40°C is planned. During discharge the range expands to -20 to 60°C and whilst not operating to -40 to 70°C. The insulated warm compartment needs to be maintained above -40°C whilst the equipment external to the insulation has to tolerate directly the martian environment.
