In addition to looking for the evidence of past and present life on Mars, the GAP instrument will study components in the atmosphere which will reveal the planet's history and monitor climatic effects. Used in conjunction with the X-ray spectrometer which will provide potassium data, the mass spectrometer will measure argon abundance to enable rocks to be dated based on the extent to which 40K has decayed to 40Ar.
